Manzú, Uma, Rocamar, Banana Beach, Restaurante Playa Carmen and Ranchos Itaúna compared for eating on or facing the sand: what to order, price level, reservations, sunset timing and honest caveats.
Six restaurants in Santa Teresa and Mal Pais put your table on the sand or directly facing it: Manzú at Hotel Nantipa, Uma at Playa Cielo, Rocamar, Banana Beach, Restaurante Playa Carmen (El Carmen) and Ranchos Itaúna, which only serves dinner in high season. Manzú is the best meal, Uma and El Carmen have the best sunset tables for dinner, Rocamar is a daytime lounger with a 7pm close, and Banana Beach is the casual one with live music. The sun sets between 5:15pm and 5:45pm all year, so book a table for 5:00pm.
The short version
Manzú is the dinner to plan around: breakfast from 7am, lunch noon to 5:45pm, dinner 6pm to 9:45pm, with a $125 tasting menu and a $315 private beachfront dinner for two. Uma is the lively, expensive, reservation heavy sunset table, with cocktails near $15. El Carmen at Playa Carmen in Mal Pais (closed Tuesdays, per its site) is the plain beachfront restaurant with a long drinks list, a blue cheese burger and chifrijo, and a bill that surprises people. Rocamar is the swings and loungers, open 12pm to 7pm and closed Mondays. Banana Beach is a kilometre north of the crossroads, with day beds and live music nightly. Ranchos Itaúna is the Brazilian restaurant on the beach between the two main breaks, and its dinner service runs only from November to April.
Most of these are covered from the party angle in the beach clubs guide and from the view angle in the sunset spots guide. This one asks a different question: where can you sit with your feet near the sand and eat a real meal. For hotels with beach restaurants, see beachfront hotels. For the wider ranking, see best restaurants in Santa Teresa.
Manzú at Hotel Nantipa
Manzú is Hotel Nantipa's open-air restaurant on the sand, 150 metres northwest of Super Costa. The hotel's own page lists breakfast 7am to 10:30am, lunch noon to 5:45pm and dinner 6pm to 9:45pm. The price points on that page are the Pura Vida tasting menu at $125 plus tax per person, a six course Romantic Dinner at a private beachfront table at $315 plus tax per couple including a bottle of wine, and in-bungalow breakfast at $110 per couple. The private dinner and bungalow breakfast need 24 hours notice and are limited to two a day.
The a la carte lunch is the value. Our best restaurants guide puts lunch for two without alcohol at $40 to $45, and reviewers name the catch of the day, the steak and the tamarind margarita. The signature is the Rondón stew, a coconut seafood stew on the tasting menu. Tripadvisor has it at 4.9 from 755 reviews. Reserve on OpenTable or its own site. Who it suits: the one dinner you want to remember, and couples. The caveat: hotel pricing, and a la carte dinner is where you will spend what a tasting menu costs.
Uma Beachfront at Playa Cielo
Uma sits on the sand at the Playa Cielo hotel, down the Casa Zen beach access road in central Santa Teresa. It opens at 11:30am and closes at 10pm, according to its Instagram, although a June 2026 post advertises noon. The Mediterranean menu is tapas, fish kebabs, ceviche, tuna tartare, grilled fish, filet hummus and vegan plates. A daily happy hour with tapas runs 3pm to 5pm.
It is the priciest of the walk-up beach spots. A January 2026 reviewer logged cocktails at $15 each and no food specials, and another found a quarter of a cabbage at six dollars plus 13% tax and 10% service. Other 2026 reviewers call the sunset the best in town and the service the best they received, naming ceviche and the shrimp. Reserve by WhatsApp, +506 8782 9449, and ask for a front row table; one review aggregator reports table allocation mix ups on busy nights, so confirm by message the same day. Who it suits: a sunset dinner with a drink list and DJ music on Friday. The caveat: it costs more than the beach clubs a few hundred metres away.
Restaurante Playa Carmen (El Carmen)
El Carmen is the beachfront restaurant and bar at Playa Carmen, 200 metres west of the crossroads in Mal Pais. Its own website lists noon to 9pm every day and closed on Tuesday, although other listings show 11am to 9:30pm with a midnight close on Friday, so trust the site and message first. Breakfast runs on weekends in high season. The phone is +506 8645 4668. Google has it at 4.3 from 1,160 reviews and Tripadvisor at 4.2 from 464.
Reviewers order calamari rings, fish and chips, mahi mahi tacos, pizza, a blue cheese burger, chifrijo, fish ceviche and the gin and tonic list. The beachfront tables get praise in 2025 and 2026 sunset reviews and need a reservation. The complaints are consistent: slow service when it is full, flies, wind, loud music, and bills. One diner paid $50 for an appetizer, a burger and two beers, and another says the staff ask for a tip even though service is added. There are day lockers and ice cream out the back. Who it suits: sunset drinks and an easy dinner at the Mal Pais end. The caveat: pay attention to the bill and the ATV parking guard who will ask for money.
Rocamar
Rocamar is the swings and loungers spot on the north side, 500 metres north of Super La Hacienda and 50 metres east to the beach. The house rule is a $15 minimum spend per lounger and cocktails from $12, according to our own listings and the happy hours guide. It is open 12pm to 7pm Tuesday to Sunday and closed Monday, and the busiest hour is sunset on Sunday. The holiday dinners are reservation only on WhatsApp +506 8862 8000.
Because it closes at 7pm, Rocamar is a late lunch and golden hour drink with a seafood plate, not a long dinner. Who it suits: swings, a lounger and a sunset cocktail. The caveat: one review describes a bill at double the expected price for an off menu special, so ask the price before you order anything not on the menu.
Banana Beach
Banana Beach Restaurant is about a kilometre north of the crossroads at the entrance to town, part of the Banana Beach hotel. Its own site says it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on the beach, advertises 2 for 1 cocktails, and puts on live music each evening. It says it is open until 1am, and the party night changes by week, so check the Instagram. The menu runs burgers, bowls, seafood and smoothies, and Google has it at 4.3 from over 2,100 reviews. Who it suits: groups on a budget who want music and a bonfire. The caveat: casual rather than a special occasion room, and the busy sunset crowd.
Ranchos Itaúna
Ranchos Itaúna is a small family run beach hotel with a Brazilian restaurant in front of a tide pool, between the two main breaks. The menu is Brazilian and international: churrasco, crispy calamari rings (Aneis de Lula), grilled octopus, the Filet Itaúna with shrimp, peanut and coconut sauce, and Variação do Mar, a grilled seafood platter that visitors say feeds four. It hosts Deep Tuesday, a weekly day and sunset beach party, and Saturday SoundLab DJ sessions with a bonfire and fire shows in high season, and the phone is +506 2640 0095.
Seasons matter here. Ranchos Itaúna's own listing says the dinner and sunset restaurant service runs November to April, with breakfast all year, so do not plan a sunset dinner here in October. A 2025 review called the food okay and overpriced for the portions, while others loved the setting and the service. Who it suits: Brazilian food in the dry season, and a front row seat for sunset drinks. The caveat: it is closed for dinner right now.
Blue Mist, Playa Hermosa and Montezuma
Blue Mist Hotel and Beach Club has a reserved table beach restaurant near Playa Hermosa, and its restaurant closes for September and October per its own site, reopening in November. In Montezuma, Playa de los Artistas, Cocolores, Chico's Playa and Montezuma Latino Beach Food all sit on or facing the sand. The Montezuma restaurants guide compares them.
Ocean views that need a long look
Santa Teresa is a long strip, and the main road runs behind the first line of hotels. A listing that says near the beach may be a 300 to 500 metre walk, so use the address. Uma sits down the Casa Zen beach access road, and Rocamar is 50 metres east of the road to the sand, which tells you the beach is off the main road. Brukas is a hilltop restaurant with the cleanest west view in town, but you look down at the water from above, with no sand underfoot (sunset spots guide). Marisquería Frank's Place at the Mal Pais crossroads is under a bamboo rancho that Petit Futé describes as sheltered from the street, which is a lovely table but not a beachfront one. Chez Coco is marked closed on Instagram, so do not plan a sunset around it.
Sunset timing and booking
Sunset falls between 5:15pm and 5:45pm all year. The sunset crowd is in place by 5:15pm, so book 4:45pm or 5pm at the restaurants that take reservations: Manzú, Uma, El Carmen and Ranchos Itaúna in high season. Rocamar and Banana Beach are walk in except on Sundays and holidays. In green season you can usually walk in at 4:30pm, and afternoon rain shortens hours, so check the same day.
Bills carry 13% tax and 10% service, as in the tipping guide. Bring a layer, because the wind comes off the water after dark, and pay with a card where you can. For after dinner, see date night in Santa Teresa and the bars and cocktails guide.
