The most romantic places to stay in Santa Teresa and Mal Pais for a honeymoon, with nightly rates, private pools and adults-only hotels, plus who provides the sunset dinner, couples massage, horse ride and private boat.
A honeymoon in Santa Teresa costs roughly $220 to $700 a night for a room that deserves the occasion, plus about $60 to $100 a head for the dinner you will remember. The best adults-only picks are Mint Santa Teresa (from $220, five rooms), OCiO Villas in Mal Pais (private plunge pool in every villa) and Vista de Olas (infinity pool, from $121). If you want the sand at your door, Nantipa's beachfront bungalows start at $450.
The short version
Santa Teresa is not a resort honeymoon. There is no butler, no turndown with rose petals unless you ask, and the road outside is dust or mud. What you get is small hotels, private plunge pools, a beach that glows pink at sunset, and operators who will arrange a couples massage in your room or a horse ride at 3:30pm. Pick the hotel for the pool and the quiet, then book two or three things from the lists below and leave the rest of the week empty.
My picks, by what matters most to you:
- Private plunge pool, best value: Mint Santa Teresa, but only the Deluxe Pool Room has one. From $220 on the hotel's own site.
- Private plunge pool in every villa: OCiO Villas in Mal Pais, adults only, roughly $400 to $700 in high season on request.
- Sunset pool and a lower price: Hotel Vista de Olas, adults only, from about $121 in green season and $158 in high season.
- Beachfront bungalow: Hotel Nantipa, Ninta bungalows from $520, Manti from $450.
- Adults-only beach club hotel: Blue Mist, nine villas, a cold plunge and sauna, and a beach club out front.
- A package with the extras built in: Hotel Tropico Latino, a five night honeymoon package with meals and a couples massage included, priced on request.
December to April is the dry season and the honeymoon season, and the fortnight over Christmas and New Year is when rates jump. If you can travel in May, June or November you will pay a quarter to two fifths less for the same room. I wrote up the seasons in the best time to visit guide.
Where to stay for a honeymoon
Rates below are per night for two, taken from each hotel's own site or the site's best hotels in Santa Teresa guide, before the 13% tax unless stated. The places that do not publish rates say so.
Mint Santa Teresa
Five rooms on the hill above the centre, designed by Studio Saxe, adults only. The hotel's own site says "starting at $220", and booking engines show about $346 in high season. Only the Deluxe Pool Room has a private plunge pool; everyone else shares the view pool. Breakfast is a buffet from 8am to 10am in the lounge, with fresh bread, tropical fruit, homemade granola and unlimited coffee and coconuts. It is rated 4.9 from 132 reviews, the best of any hotel in town.
Who it suits: couples who want a house party for ten rather than a resort. The caveat is that there is no restaurant and the beach is a short ride away, so you need an ATV or a taxi for dinner. With five rooms it fills first, so book Mint six months out for December through March and ask for the pool room by name.
OCiO Villas, Mal Pais
OCiO is the property that used to be Casa Chameleon. It is ten one-bedroom villas cut into the hillside above Mal Pais, each with a private plunge pool, air conditioning, a kitchenette and an open-air terrace facing the Pacific, plus two larger suites. Adults only, with a shared view pool and a restaurant; the deluxe villas include half board. Rates are quoted on request and land around $400 to $700 a night in high season. It is rated 4.6 from 184 reviews.
Who it suits: couples who will spend the day at their own pool and are happy to be 2 km south of the restaurants. The caveat is the road, which needs a car or ATV for every meal out.
Hotel Vista de Olas, Mal Pais
An adults-only boutique hotel on a hilltop above Mal Pais, mostly solar-powered, with an infinity pool and swim-up bar that has the best sunset view of any pool on this coast. Rooms and villas have air conditioning and private terraces, breakfast is included, and the hotel's own site advertises it as a romantic getaway. Rates start around $121 in green season and $158 in high season. Reservations are on +506 2640 0183. The road up is steep and now paved, but plan on a 4x4 or ATV in the rain.
Who it suits: couples who want a view and a pool without OCiO's price. The caveat is that some reviews mention maintenance slipping, so ask for a recently refreshed room. Day visitors can also swim here, which I cover in the pool day pass guide.
Hotel Nantipa
Nantipa has 155 metres of beach in the centre of town. The honeymoon rooms are the 80 square metre Ninta Beachfront Bungalow and the Manti Bungalow, each with a king bed, built for two guests. The Manti is the secluded one. Rates in the site's hotel guide are $450 for a Manti and $520 for a Ninta, and the beachfront villa (three bedrooms, private pool) is $1,600. The saltwater pool is shared; the private pool belongs to the villa only. Manzú, the beachfront restaurant, is open daily from 7am to 10pm and the Numu spa sits on the sand.
Who it suits: couples who want the beach as the front yard and every service within 100 steps. The caveat is that the sea is a surf beach with rocks at low tide, so the swimming is the pool. Nantipa's direct offer of 20% off four nights or more applies only to travel from 25 August to 31 October 2026, so it will not help a December honeymoon. Ask about any new offer for 2027.
Blue Mist Hotel and Beach Club
Nine villas on the beach in north Santa Teresa, adults only, with a Wellness Center that offers contrast therapy (cold plunge and sauna rituals), massages and movement classes, and a beach club open to the public. Green season rates dip to about $130 on booking engines, and high season runs $300 and up. The restaurant is closed during September and October, though the hotel stays open. The beach club plays music late, so couples who want silence at 10pm should choose another hotel.
Pranamar Villas
Oceanfront at the north end near Playa Hermosa: thatched villas and bungalows with four-poster beds, a saltwater pool, a serious yoga programme and a Sunset Tiki Bar on the beach that is open to the public. Rates run $220 to $500 depending on villa and season. The water in front is calmer than in the centre. During retreats the property is mostly one group, so ask whether a retreat overlaps your dates.
Laloon Luxury Suites
Laloon Luxury Suites is an adults-only mountain retreat in the hills near Playa Carmen with four air-conditioned suites, and booking-engine listings describe a private pool for each. Its own site lists no rate. Booking engines showed about 478 pounds for one August night and $741 for a January night, so budget well above $600 and get a quote. It is not in the other hotel guides here, so treat it as a place to message before you commit.
Hotel Tropico Latino
Tropico Latino has beachfront bungalows on Playa Carmen, a restaurant (Shambala) and an integrative wellness spa, and it sells a honeymoon package. The package is five nights in a beachfront bungalow with breakfast, lunch and dinner at Shambala, a romantic dinner on arrival, a 60 minute couples massage with two glasses of wine, one extra spa treatment, a beach horse ride for the couple, a gift basket and two sarongs. Surf lessons are extra. Rates are not published; message +506 8453 3422 on WhatsApp for pricing. It is not adults-only. Who it suits: couples who want one price for the week and no planning.
What couples actually book
These are the extras that honeymooners ask me about, with the person or place that delivers each.
Sunset dinner
Manzú at Nantipa is the benchmark: tables on the sand, fish from the local boats, and a six course Pura Vida tasting menu that is the most ambitious meal in town. Budget $60 to $100 a head with drinks and book ahead in high season. Shambala at Tropico Latino is the quieter, garden-set option. Brukas sits on a hill with the best restaurant view in town and needs an ATV or 4x4 to reach. The sun sets around 5:15 to 5:45pm, so be seated by 5pm. The date night guide and the sunset spots guide cover the rest.
Couples massage
Four routes work. Natural Integrative Wellness at Tropico Latino sells a couples massage with wine inside the honeymoon package. Numu is the spa at Nantipa, with signature massages and body rituals; the hotel did not list a couples price online. Blooma Boutique Hotel in Playa Carmen runs massages in your own room at $110 to $120 for 60 minutes (relaxing $110, deep tissue, deep relax and Thai $120); email frontdesk@bloomahotel.com to book. For a villa, BeWell Costa Rica sends therapists to you across Santa Teresa and Mal Pais without a home visit surcharge. Expect $65 to $90 for a 60 minute session per person at independents; the massages guide has the practitioners.
Horseback at sunset
Ollie's Adventures runs a two hour group ride through jungle and beach with a mountain viewpoint at 8am or 3:30pm for $68 a person. A private guide adds about $20 each, which lets you trot or canter rather than follow a line. Ventura Santa Teresa runs a three hour evening tour built around sunset, booked at its reception. See the horseback riding guide for the horse welfare notes.
A private boat
Tiko Tours runs Isla Tortuga as a private trip from the Tambor pier for one to four people from $480 plus 13% tax, with snorkel gear, lunch and drinks included and transport extra at $25 a person. For two people it is an expensive day, though you set your own timing. At night, the Bioluminescence Tour from Santa Teresa desk sells a private boat with transport for $360 for the group, and a shared three hour boat tour at $70 or $85 with hotel pickup. Read the Isla Tortuga guide and the bioluminescence guide first; the glow is best near the new moon.
Dinner at your villa
If you rent a villa, a private chef costs about $35 to $60 a head for a casual dinner and $125 to $185 a head for a plated tasting menu. Most independents want four guests, so a couple does better on a platform dinner or a restaurant table. The private chefs guide names ByLombardi Chef, Aroma and the platform options.
A seven night plan
Nights one and two at a quiet hotel with nothing booked. Night three, the Manzú dinner. Day four, a massage at noon and the 3:30pm horse ride. Day five, empty. Day six, the private Tortuga boat or the bioluminescence tour on the new moon. Last night, dinner on the beach at Shambala or a chef at your villa.
Getting here and getting around
Fly into Cobano (ACO) on a domestic flight or take a shuttle from San Jose or Liberia. The getting to Santa Teresa guide lays out the routes. Honeymooners staying in Mal Pais or on a hill need an ATV or a car; Mint, Vista de Olas and OCiO all sit up a steep road. A taxi to dinner costs less than a quad rental for a short stay, and the getting around guide covers both.
Mistakes to avoid
Booking a hotel described as oceanfront without checking the map. Many sit 100 to 500 metres inland, and the beachfront hotels guide lists the ones that are on the sand. Arriving in September or October expecting every restaurant to be open; Blue Mist's restaurant is closed then. Booking the boat day for a full moon week, when the bioluminescence is faint.
If you are marrying here as well, the weddings guide covers venues and planners. Browse every hotel and villa in the stay directory.
