Plan Santa Teresa rainy-season travel without gambling on river crossings: current road checks, rental terms, visibility, route changes and transport decisions.

For a rainy-season journey to Santa Teresa, ask about the actual road on your travel date. A route that worked in dry weather may change after heavy rain. A four-wheel-drive vehicle can improve traction in some conditions, but it does not make a flooded road or river crossing safe.

Confirm the Route Before Leaving

Send your accommodation the starting point and the route your navigation app proposes. Ask whether that route is appropriate now and whether the final driveway has particular access requirements. For a long transfer, ask the operator which route it plans to use and how it handles a closure.

Keep the driver, accommodation and rental company's contacts available offline. An old travel forum report is not a road-status bulletin. When official instructions conflict with a map shortcut, follow the authorities and choose an appropriate alternative.

Water Across the Road

Costa Rica's transport ministry advises caution around flooding and explicitly warns against crossing a bridge overtopped by a river. Water can hide depth, damage or a current that is stronger than it looks. Stop somewhere appropriate and arrange a route change rather than testing the crossing.

Do not follow another vehicle into floodwater as a way of deciding it is passable. Different vehicles and drivers have different limitations, and conditions can change. Never send someone into the water to measure a crossing for the vehicle.

Vehicle and Rental Questions

Before choosing a vehicle, ask about the real route, passengers and equipment. Read the rental agreement for permitted roads, water damage, recovery and insurance restrictions. An advertised SUV is not a promise that every coastal shortcut is covered.

If you are uncomfortable driving in those conditions, use an operator who confirms an appropriate route. Give them the luggage and board dimensions and ask about a child seat if needed. Do not book a vehicle merely by counting seats.

Visibility and Flexibility

MOPT's September 2026 advice stresses reduced speed and improved visibility during rain. Allow the driver to adapt to conditions and avoid planning a close connection that depends on an uninterrupted journey. Keep a change of clothes and essential items accessible if the trip is disrupted.

For a day trip, make the return route part of the decision before leaving. A beach outing is optional; a safe route home matters more than completing the original plan.

FAQ

Is four-wheel drive enough for a river crossing?

No. It does not establish the depth, current, road condition or permission under your rental agreement.

Is the coastal route always open in the dry season?

No permanent guarantee is made here. Ask about current conditions for the exact route.

Where should I check first?

Your transport operator and accommodation can help identify the route; use official road and emergency instructions for closures and hazards.

Should I follow another vehicle through floodwater?

No. Another driver crossing does not establish depth, current, road condition or suitability for your vehicle. Stop appropriately and arrange another route.
