Uber and Bolt do not work in Santa Teresa. The whole southern Nicoya Peninsula runs on red taxis and private drivers booked over WhatsApp, and you agree the fare before you get in. Budget $5 to $10 for a hop along the main road, $30 to $40 to Cobano airport, $50 to $70 to Montezuma, and more at night. Pantera Transportation is the one 24-hour dispatch number in town.
The short version
Santa Teresa is not on Uber's list of Costa Rican cities, and Bolt does not operate anywhere in Costa Rica. The app may draw a route and quote a price from your hotel, but no driver will accept it; residents and every transport operator here say the same thing, and the local e-bike company Bimba publishes a whole page on it (gobimba.com). The Bolt Santa Teresa you may see in our directory is a food business 250 metres north of the school, filed under places to eat, and nothing to do with ride-hailing. DiDi and inDrive exist in San Jose but have no drivers here either.
What you get instead is a working system that predates the apps. Licensed red taxis with a yellow triangle on the door wait at the Playa Carmen cruce and outside the bigger hotels. Dozens of private drivers take bookings on WhatsApp, and your accommodation will have two or three numbers pinned to the wall. Pantera Transportation runs a 24/7 taxi and shuttle line. A tuk-tuk service works the main road by day. Fares are negotiated, paid in cash more often than not, and go up after dark, in the rain, and in high season.
How rides work here
Red taxis are the official option. Costa Rica's regulator ARESEP sets the meter maximums, and the tariff in force from 1 July 2026 is ₡840 for the first kilometre and ₡840 per kilometre after that for a regular sedan, with a rural rate of ₡930 per kilometre, per Bimba's transport guide. In practice the meter is rarely switched on in Santa Teresa; drivers quote a flat number, and that number is usually a little above the meter for short hops and about even with it for Cobano and Montezuma. You can ask for the meter (la maría), and some drivers will oblige.
WhatsApp drivers are the everyday option. Ask reception for a number, save two, and message the night before for anything with a deadline. Send both pins (pickup and destination), the passenger count, luggage and surfboards, and ask for the total in dollars or colones. A driver who has your pin will find a villa up a dirt road that a taxi at the cruce would refuse.
Pantera Transportation is the closest thing to a dispatch service. Its Facebook page and Tripadvisor listing describe 24/7 taxi service plus shuttles and private transfers, on +506 8591 9555. Regulars use it for late pickups and airport runs precisely because someone answers at 4am.
Santa Tere Tuk Tuk Service runs a three-wheeler along the main road and to the nearby beaches by day, with a small but happy Tripadvisor following. It is the cheapest seat for a short hop with a board bag and the least comfortable one on a wet afternoon.
Bimba e-bikes are the reason many people never take a taxi in daylight. The shared electric bikes cost $1 to unlock plus $0.50 a minute, or $15 for a day pass with 100 minutes, as of August 2026, and they cover the whole paved stretch from Playa Hermosa to Mal Pais. Night rides, rain, and December through April all push fares up by $5 to $20, and a driver waiting for you will charge for the time. Night availability
There are taxis at night, but not many, and not on demand. The stand at the cruce empties by around 10pm outside high season, and drivers go home. If you are out for dinner or a party and do not have wheels, book your return before you leave the house: message a driver with a pickup time and pin, and reconfirm at the table. Between roughly midnight and 5am you are relying on Pantera or a driver who already knows you, and the fare for a ten minute ride can be $15 to $20. Cash, cards, and colones
Taxis are cash. Most WhatsApp drivers and Pantera will take a SINPE Móvil transfer if you have a Costa Rican bank account, and a few take cards through a phone reader for airport runs, but you should assume dollars or colones in your pocket. Pay in colones when you can: drivers quote in dollars for convenience and round in their favour when they give change in colones. Small notes matter, because nobody at 6am has change for a $50 bill. Practical notes
Agree the price before you get in, every time, including with red taxis. "¿Cuánto cobra hasta Playa Hermosa?" is the whole conversation.
Send a map pin. Santa Teresa addresses are "200 metres north of the school"; a Google Maps pin works for every driver.
Say what you are carrying. A surfboard, three suitcases, or a stroller needs a pickup or a van, and a driver who arrives in a Yaris will either refuse or charge extra.
Share the ride. Cobano airport arrivals often pool a taxi at the airstrip, and the drivers expect it. Ask the people on your Sansa flight.
Book airport runs the day before. For a 6:45am shuttle or a Cobano departure, confirm the driver at 8pm the night before and again at 5:30am. If a driver cancels, Pantera is the fallback.
