Where to eat breakfast in Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen before and after a dawn surf: bakeries open from 5:30am, sodas with gallo pinto, cafes from 7am, with 2026 hours and prices.

Almost nothing in Santa Teresa serves a sit down breakfast before 7am. The earliest door is Panadería La Principal on the Las Piedras road, which lists 5:30am on weekdays and 6am on weekends for bread and pastries. From 7am The Bakery, Eat Street, Kooks, Aroma, Mafra's and Soda Tipico Mall are all open, and the proper cafes follow at 7:30am. A gallo pinto breakfast at a soda costs about 3,000 to 4,000 colones, and a cafe plate runs 5,000 to 8,000.

The short version

If you are in the water at first light, buy bread at Panadería La Principal on the way, then eat a real breakfast at 7:30 or 8am when the dawn session ends. Soda Tipico Mall is the cheap gallo pinto stop on the north road for Playa Hermosa and Manzanillo sessions. Gula is the best plate in town but it opens at 7am and closes at 2pm. The Bakery is the safe choice for a group. This guide covers early hours and a typical Costa Rican breakfast. For the long, slow version with eggs benedict and a mimosa, read the brunch guide instead.

Dawn tends to be the cleanest surf, and the wind turns onshore by mid morning, which is why the town's breakfast rush runs from 7:30 to 9:30am. The surf guide and the tide guide explain when to paddle out, and the smoothies and acai bowls guide covers the bowl side of breakfast.

Panadería La Principal

Panadería La Principal is a bakery on the Las Piedras road near Playa Carmen. Its listing data shows 5:30am to 7:30pm Monday to Friday and 6am to 7:30pm on Saturday and Sunday, with a 4.9 rating from only 16 reviews, so it is small and local. It sells bread, rolls and pastries rather than plated breakfasts, and it posts no menu or prices online. It suits the surfer who needs a roll and a coffee before the dark turns grey. The caveat: grab and go only, and the small review count means the hours can drift, so check a day ahead.

The Bakery

The Bakery is 100 metres north of the crossroads at Playa Carmen and opens at 7am seven days a week, closing at 10pm, according to its own site. The morning menu runs from croissants, bagels and shakshuka to acai bowls and paninis, and the oven works overnight at a second site so the pastries are fresh when the doors open. A plate comes to $10 to $15, and a table of four with juice and coffee came to about 37,000 colones in a January 2026 review.

It has delivery and takeout on WhatsApp +506 8683 5353. Our bakeries guide says it opens at 6am on Fridays, but its own site lists 7am every day, so plan around 7am. Who it suits: groups with mixed appetites. The caveat: the line from 8am in high season, so arrive at 7 or after 10.

Mafra's

Mafra's Panaderia Pasteleria y Cafe is a bakery cafe 20 metres north of Super Muralla, across from Hotel Atrapasueños, with a second location. Other listings show 7am to 8pm, extending to 10pm on Friday and Saturday, with air conditioning indoors and a patio. The phone is +506 2640 1109. It suits pastries and an espresso after the first session. The caveat: it posts no current prices, so check the case before you order.

Eat Street

Eat Street opens at 7am and stays open to 10pm, with four vendors under one roof, including Sunrise Cafe for the early shift and Happy Bowl for smoothie bowls. It sits on the main road across from Selina's north. An older review reported that breakfast was pick up only at the time, so ask whether the seating is serving breakfast when you arrive. It suits groups that cannot agree on a bowl, a bagel or a burrito. If you are in a rental, the vendors also deliver, as covered in the food delivery guide.

Cafe Social, Kaukau and El Somos

These three open at 7am or 7:30am and suit a slower start:

  • Cafe Social runs 7am to 4pm and serves acai bowls, salads, sandwiches, wraps and eggs benedict, according to a Costa Rica Vibes review.
  • Kaukau is the small couple run cafe in Plaza Royal, local 1, open 7:30am to 4:30pm every day, with specialty coffee, breakfast bowls and eggs benedict. Its website calls itself a breakfast and healthy lunch spot, and the phone is +506 6457 9285.
  • The Somos Restaurant is the Airstream at the base of the Somos surf hotel, with an all day menu from 7:30am to 5:30pm and dinner from 6pm to midnight on its own site. The menu lists acai, avocado toast, cinnamon roll and a sesame honey chicken burrito, and Google has it at 4.7 from over 1,000 reviews. A reviewer called the brioche french toast expensive for the portion.

For specialty coffee at 7:30am, see the coffee guide.

Gula

Gula is the best rated breakfast in town at 4.9 on Google from 352 reviews. Its site lists service daily from 7am to 2pm with tax included: avocado toast with feta and poached eggs 6,200 colones, gallo pinto 6,500, breakfast tacos 5,000, huevos benedictinos on a croissant 5,500, acai bowl 6,600 and a cappuccino 2,500. That is $9 to $12 a plate. It suits a long breakfast after a dawn session. The caveat: it closes at 2pm and fills by 9am.

Aroma

Aroma at the Ventura Santa Teresa Hotel serves breakfast from 7am to 11am, then the day menu until 9pm. The menu leans healthy with shakshuka, salmon bagel, avocado toast, breakfast burritos and acai bowls at around 7,900 colones. It suits hotel guests and anyone who wants a polished room. The caveat: it is the most resort-like of the group, and the bowls cost more than Gula's.

Soda Tipico Mall and the sodas

Soda Tipico Mall is on the north road toward Manzanillo and opens at 7am, closing at 5:30pm. It is the stop for a gallo pinto breakfast before or after a Playa Hermosa session, and our sodas guide puts pinto with eggs and coffee at 3,000 to 4,000 colones, cash. Soda Pura Vida in Santa Teresa gets a Tripadvisor review that praises its gallo pinto with bread, eggs and sweet plantains, and its healthy breakfast juices. Soda Tiquicia lists an early opening on Google, but locals say not to count on it before 9am, as the cheap eats guide notes. Read the sodas guide for the comparison.

If you stay in Montezuma, Soda El Artesano is open 6am to 10pm every day, which makes it the earliest sit down breakfast on this stretch of coast. See the Montezuma restaurants guide.

What a Costa Rican breakfast looks like

The standard order is a desayuno típico. Gallo pinto (rice and black beans fried together with onion and pepper), a couple of eggs fried or scrambled, fried sweet plantain, a slice of white cheese or a spoon of natilla (sour cream), and a corn tortilla or toast, with coffee. At a soda it costs 2,000 to 4,000 colones with coffee. The coffee is typically a café chorreado or a café con leche, and the fresh juice is made to order. Cafes in Santa Teresa add a nod to the local version, such as Gula's gallo pinto at 6,500 colones, and you pay the extra for the setting and the eggs.

How to plan a surf morning

Surf the first light, then eat. A sit down breakfast at 7am assumes you are either not surfing or surfing very early, so pick up bread at La Principal before the session and keep the cafe for 8am. If you surf at Playa Hermosa or Manzanillo, eat at Tipico Mall on the road back. On a weekend in high season arrive before 8am at The Bakery or Gula, or after 10am. In green season most places are quieter, and some cut their hours, so check Instagram or WhatsApp the day before.
