What to do in Santa Teresa when it rains: named spas, recovery clubs, Pilates, air conditioned cafes, movie nights and bookshops with prices, plus what closes and which roads flood.

When it rains in Santa Teresa, go indoors for something warm and booked in advance: a spa afternoon (Skin & Soul's green season spa day is ₡95,000 for two hours), a sauna and ice bath at ACTIVO for $30, a Pilates class from $20, or a long lunch at an air conditioned cafe. Rain here usually arrives after 2pm and lasts one to two hours, so the plan is a good morning outside and a booked afternoon inside. September and October are the exceptions, with heavier and less predictable rain.

The short version

I have not found a cooking class or a ceramics studio on this side of the peninsula that I can verify, so this list is built from places that are open and have a published price or hours. Cooking classes you may see on booking sites are in Monteverde and Manuel Antonio, not here. What does work in the rain:

  • A spa afternoon: Skin & Soul, OM Spa, Numu or Anamaya in Montezuma.
  • Heat and cold: ACTIVO ($30 a day), re:center ($60 a day) or Somos Sweat Den.
  • A class: BODYKULT mat Pilates at $20, or a reformer class at This Way Movement or HAPPILATES.
  • A long coffee: Kaukau, which is air conditioned.
  • A book or a film: Ágora bookshop, or movie nights at Lost Boyz.
  • A waterfall: Montezuma Falls is at its fullest from June to December, if you go in the morning.

This guide covers the wet days. For the season overall, read the rainy season guide, and for activities when it is dry see things to do in Santa Teresa beyond surfing.

Spas and massage

A spa is the easiest answer to a grey afternoon, and prices below are from the verified menus in the spa guide.

Skin & Soul Holistics in Plaza Las Palmas is the one with a rain specific offer: a Green Season Spa Day Retreat, two hours for ₡95,000, which is about $190 at roughly ₡500 to the dollar. Its single facials run from ₡63,000 for an hour to ₡135,000 for two hours. It is open 9:30am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, treatments are by appointment, and the WhatsApp is +506 8771 5911. Book ahead because there are only two therapists, and ask how long the green season offer runs.

OM Spa is a classic day spa, 200 metres north of the football field, open 10am to 6pm daily and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. The scrub, wrap and massage combination suits a two hour afternoon. Prices are quoted on WhatsApp, so ask for the total with tax.

Numu Wellness Center at Nantipa is open air but roofed, open 10am to 6pm daily, and it takes day visitors. In the south of the peninsula, Anamaya Spa above Montezuma publishes the clearest menu: massage from $80 for 60 minutes to $135 for 90 minutes, open 8am to 8pm on weekdays. Massage alone is compared in the massage guide, where a 60 minute session costs $65 to $90.

Sauna, ice bath and the gym

Rain is the best time for heat and cold, because the cold plunge feels better when you are not sweating through it.

ACTIVO Fitness Center sells the cheapest recovery pass in town: $30 for a day of ice baths, a hot bath and the sauna, no gym membership needed. A day pass for the gym is $15, and a day with gym, classes and recovery is $45. It is open 6am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 6am to noon on Sunday. re:center in the jungle north of town charges $60 for a full day of contrast therapy and infrared sauna (WhatsApp +506 8622 9431). Somos Sweat Den at House of Somos has a cedar sauna and a cold plunge, with non-guest day passes priced at the desk.

For a workout under a roof, Central Gym at Playa Carmen has the only air conditioned floor in town, and Real Training runs coached small group classes upstairs at Super Ronny 1. Full prices are in the gyms guide.

Pilates and yoga

BODYKULT has the clearest prices: $20 for a drop-in mat class, $72 for four classes, and $200 a month for unlimited. Reformer classes at This Way Movement run $30 to $40 as reported by regulars. HAPPILATES next to Nantipa books through a Momoyoga schedule or +506 7119 5602, with morning and late afternoon slots only. The Pilates guide compares them, and the yoga studios guide covers drop-in yoga. Rain days are when these classes fill, so book the morning of.

Cafes, books and movies

Kaukau at Plaza Royal is air conditioned, open 7:30am to 4:30pm daily, with reliable WiFi and the tuna poke bowl that reviewers keep naming. The Roastery is the other work friendly cafe, though it caps WiFi at two hours. More options are in the coffee guide.

Ágora, Books and Analogue Photography is a small bookshop connected to the Beach Film Club, open Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm, WhatsApp +506 8561 9043. Its site posts no screening schedule, so message before you go if you want a film night. Art & Soul Gallery is open noon to 5pm daily except Monday.

For an evening, Lost Boyz hosts movie nights and has a bar open to anyone from noon to 11pm Monday to Saturday, with beers at $3 to $4. Other bars are in the bars guide. If you would rather eat in, a private chef costs about $35 to $60 per person for a casual villa dinner, covered in the private chef guide.

Waterfalls in the wet

Montezuma Falls is the one outing that is better in rain. The pools are deep and the falls are full from June through December, and the same water makes the riverbed trail slippery. Go in the morning, wear shoes with grip, and get out of the river by early afternoon. Flash floods on the Montezuma river are rare but real, so leave if you hear a roar upstream. Skip El Chorro after heavy rain, since the approach crosses the stream at the top of the falls. The waterfalls guide and the Montezuma day trip guide cover fees and logistics.

What closes and which roads flood

The Thursday market runs in the rain but is smaller, and a heavy downpour thins the crowd fast. Some restaurants and a few hotels close in September and October. In Montezuma, Sabor de Mar is closed from October 5 to November 4 this year, and several beachfront restaurants close on Mondays. Message before you drive for a specific place.

Roads are the real problem. The direct dirt road between Mal País, Cabuya and Montezuma has river crossings that can be impassable in the rainy season, and a visitor guide warns not to follow Google Maps down it. Go via Cóbano instead. North of town, the road toward Playa Hermosa and Manzanillo needs a 4x4 from May onward, and quads get flat tyres and dead batteries after sitting in the rain. Afternoon storms arrive fast, so be home before 2pm if you are going anywhere with a river. See the rainy season guide for how the months differ, and the car rental guide if you need a 4x4.

Surfing and the beach in the rain

A rainy morning can still be a good surf day, because swell is usually bigger and the wind lighter early. Beginners should read learning to surf, since bigger green season swell is humbling, and keep lessons to the first morning slot. Avoid the water during lightning, and note that lifeguard rescue is +506 2640-0911 in the daytime, otherwise 911.

FAQ

What is there to do in Santa Teresa when it rains?

The reliable indoor options are spas (Skin & Soul, OM Spa, Numu), sauna and ice bath at ACTIVO or re:center, Pilates and yoga classes, air conditioned cafes like Kaukau, and movie nights at Lost Boyz. A morning waterfall at Montezuma is better in the wet if you leave early.

Does it rain all day in Santa Teresa?

Usually not. The normal pattern is a sunny morning and rain between 2pm and 5pm for one to two hours. September and October are wetter and less predictable, with October averaging about 15 inches of rain.

What closes in the rainy season in Santa Teresa?

Some restaurants and a few small hotels close in September and October, and Montezuma businesses close more often. Surf schools, gyms, spas and studios mostly stay open. Confirm your restaurant by WhatsApp before driving to it.

Which roads flood near Santa Teresa?

The direct coast road between Mal País, Cabuya and Montezuma has river crossings that can be impassable in the rainy season. The road north toward Hermosa and Manzanillo needs a 4x4, and the Montezuma riverbed trail and El Chorro crossing get dangerous after heavy rain.

Is there a cooking class or pottery class in Santa Teresa?

No local class is published. Cooking classes on booking sites are in Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. A private chef at $35 to $60 per person for a villa dinner is the closest local option.

Is the Thursday market on when it rains?

Yes, though it is smaller. A passing shower does not stop it, but a heavy downpour thins the crowd. Bring a light rain jacket.
