Planning a bachelor or bachelorette trip to Santa Teresa in 2026: where groups stay, which activities to book and from whom, which nights suit which venue, group transport, a per-person budget built from real prices, and what goes wrong.
Santa Teresa suits a bachelor or bachelorette party of 6 to 10 people who want surf, sunsets and a few late nights rather than a club strip. A four night trip lands around $800 to $1,200 a person before flights: a shared villa or hotel rooms, one group surf lesson ($60 to $98), an ATV tour (about $68 a rider), a bioluminescence boat ($70 to $85), a private chef dinner ($35 to $60) and a beach club afternoon. Book dry season stays months ahead.
The short version
This is a beach town with a small night circuit, not Tamarindo or Jaco. There is no row of clubs. There is a sequence: surf in the morning, sunset at a beach club, dinner, then one of a few rooms that fills after 11pm. That works well for a group that likes the idea of a wellness-and-waves party, and badly for a group that wants a different club every night.
My plan for a group of eight on a long weekend:
- Stay: a villa or a small hotel you can take over, booked directly with a written noise and guest policy.
- Day one: arrive, groceries, private chef or an easy dinner.
- Day two: group surf lesson at 8am, beach club from 3pm (Rocamar or Uma), DJ night.
- Day three: ATV convoy to the Montezuma waterfalls, early night.
- Day four: boat day or bioluminescence, then the big night.
- Day five: slow breakfast, shuttle out.
The best months are December to April, when it is dry and everything runs. September and October are cheap but quiet, and some venues cut their late nights. See the best time to visit guide for the calendar.
Where groups stay
Rooms come first, because the whole trip depends on a place that will tolerate eight people and a speaker. The rule I give every group: ask the owner in writing what the noise, guest and party rules are before you pay a deposit. Not every property allows this kind of trip. Star Mountain Jungle Lodge in Mal Pais states on its booking listing that it does not accommodate bachelor or bachelorette parties, and the Mal Pais hotels guide covers the quiet side of the coast.
A villa. Private villas with a pool and a kitchen are the standard choice for groups of six to ten, and they let you bring in a chef and a massage therapist. Casa Teresa, a beachfront villa with a pool, advertises a connected second villa (Casa Teresa Grande) that sleeps up to 16, with concierge, private chef and security available, though its 2022 marketing post lists no prices. I am not writing a villa roundup here; ask the villa manager for a quote for your dates and the written party policy.
A small hotel you can fill. Nala Santa Teresa has studio and one-bedroom apartments five minutes' walk from Playa Carmen with a pool, a gym and air conditioning, and the whole property can be rented by a group; rates for a studio start around $100 to $150. Banana Beach Hotel has seven casitas sleeping three to seven on the sand next to its beachfront restaurant; average rates are about $177, and the hotel's bar runs late. Blue Mist Hotel and Beach Club is adults only with nine villas and hosts private events, but its beach club plays music late and its restaurant is closed in September and October.
Hostel dorms. A budget bachelor trip can use a private dorm at one of the best hostels, where a bed costs a fraction of a room. It works for a loud group of surfers; it does not for a bride who wants a spa weekend.
Stay in or near Playa Carmen and the centre if you want to walk to dinner and the bars. The hillside hotels in Mal Pais are lovely but add a taxi to every evening, and the best hotels in Santa Teresa lists the full range.
What to book, and from whom
A group surf lesson
Group lessons run roughly $60 to $98 a person for 90 minutes, board and rashguard included. Salt Water Surfing Co. lists $85 for a group with a 3:1 student ratio, and Pacific Surf School lists $98. Blue Mystic Surf School at Playa Carmen, next to Taco Corner, takes private groups of four to ten, says wetsuits and boards are included, and offers photos or video on request; it does not publish prices, so message +506 8920 6846. Schedule it for the morning of day two so everyone can recover before the next activity. Confirm the student to instructor ratio in writing, as the learn to surf guide recommends.
An ATV convoy
The Santa Teresa to Montezuma waterfall tour is from $135 a quad, which carries two people, with a minimum of two quads, a four hour trip and hotel pickup (per Localbird, before tax). TRX ATV Rentals runs the same waterfalls at $200 a quad. A group of eight needs four quads, about $540 before tax, or $68 a rider. See the ATV tours guide. Do the tour sober and in the daytime; the group should never ride after drinking.
A boat day
A shared Isla Tortuga day from Zuma Tours costs about $85 to $140 a person with barbecue lunch, snorkel gear and drinks. For a private boat, Tiko Tours charges from $480 plus tax for up to four people, with extra guests at a per-person rate it quotes on request, and it needs a 50 percent deposit; a group of eight should ask for a quote for the larger boat. At night, the bioluminescence tour from Santa Teresa costs $70 to $85 a person, or $360 for a private boat for the group with transport, best near the new moon. Both are covered in the Isla Tortuga guide and the bioluminescence guide.
A private chef
A private chef costs about $35 to $60 a person for a casual villa dinner, with groceries on top, and $125 to $185 a person for a tasting menu from a platform. Most independents want at least four guests, so a group is the ideal customer. ByLombardi Chef works in Mal Pais, Santa Teresa and Manzanillo and takes dinners and breakfasts; the private chefs guide names the others. Book two to three weeks ahead for a single dinner in high season, and in October for Christmas.
A beach club table
None of the beach clubs sells a big package. Rocamar asks about $15 a lounger as a minimum spend, runs a Sunday DJ from sunset and is closed on Monday. Uma has a Friday DJ and holiday line-ups; reserve a table on WhatsApp or Instagram for a Friday in high season and budget $50 to $80 a head for plates and drinks. Banana Beach has day beds and live music nightly with a bonfire. The beach clubs guide has hours and the sunset timing, which is about 5:15 to 5:45pm.
Which night, which place
| Night | Where | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Banana Beach | Surf heats in the afternoon, a beach party with a DJ and fire after |
| Tuesday | Ranchos Itaúna | Deep Tuesday, a day and sunset beach party with DJs and a bonfire |
| Wednesday | Tikiliano | Havana Night with a salsa class around 9pm; otherwise quiet |
| Thursday | Thursday market, then House of Somos | Food and a town gathering, then a party; Tikiliano has reggae and dancehall |
| Friday | Uma, then Tikiliano | DJ at Uma at dinner; Latin and reggaeton at Tikiliano after 9pm |
| Saturday | Tikiliano and Ranchos | The biggest ordinary night; electronic set at Tikiliano, SoundLab at Ranchos |
| Sunday | Rocamar | Sunset DJ and bonfire, then a long dinner |
Nothing starts early. Dinner runs 7 to 9pm, bars fill by 10pm and the dance rooms after 11pm. Beer is about $3 and cocktails $10 to $14. Full moon parties at Ranchos move with the lunar calendar, and they are the one night you cannot skip if the dates line up; the best parties guide has the details. Kika and La Lora are closed, and La Pasión went quiet after April 2026 and is listed by Google as permanently closed, so skip old blog posts that send you to them and check @clublapasion if you still want to try it. Drift is a dinner and cocktail stop that closes around 10pm. The Friday night guide and the nightlife calendar cover the rest.
Group transport
From San Jose airport, a shared shuttle costs $50 to $60 a person (Transporzuma $50 to $57, Tropical Tours Shuttles $60) including the ferry, and Tropical Tours adds $20 per person beyond four in one booking and caps a minibus at ten. A private van from Tropical Tours is $260 to $280 each way, so eight people pay $33 to $35 each, and the van carries luggage and boards. Compare in the shuttle guide.
On the ground, there is no Uber or Bolt. Red taxis wait at the Playa Carmen cruce, but the stand empties by about 10pm outside high season. Book your return before you go out by messaging a WhatsApp driver with a pickup time, or call Pantera Transportation, which runs 24 hours on +506 8591 9555. A short ride after midnight is $15 to $20. A group of eight needs two cars or a van, so book a van driver for the big nights. The taxis guide has fares.
A realistic budget per person
These numbers are my arithmetic from the prices above, for eight people over four nights in high season, before flights and tips.
| Item | Per person |
|---|---|
| Group surf lesson | $60 to $98 |
| ATV tour (shared quad) | About $68 plus tax |
| Bioluminescence boat | $70 to $85 |
| Chef dinner, casual | $35 to $60 plus groceries |
| Beach club afternoon | $50 to $80 |
| Drinks, 4 nights at about $30 | About $120 |
| Private van both ways | $66 to $70 |
| Rooms, 4 nights, shared double at $134 to $167 | $270 to $335 |
That adds up to roughly $740 to $920. Add the Isla Tortuga day, groceries, tips and a villa upgrade and $800 to $1,200 is realistic. A private villa with a pool costs more per person than a mid-range hotel room, but you split the chef and the groceries. In green season, the room line drops by a third or more.
What goes wrong
Quads and alcohol. The road has no lights and the serious incidents here involve riding after drinking. Hire drivers, not quads, for the nights out.
Rain. September and October bring afternoon storms and mud, and the coast road floods at river crossings. Several venues cut their late nights, and Blue Mist's restaurant closes. Plan indoor backups.
Noise complaints. Villas have neighbours, and owners cancel on groups that ignore the rules. Read the policy and keep the music off after 10pm.
Sunburn and heat. The UV index peaks between 10am and 2pm, and a surf lesson plus a beach club afternoon is a lot of sun. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, which is required in Costa Rica.
Cash and cards. Card terminals drop in rain, ATV shops may add a 13 percent card surcharge, and some venues want cash. See the safety guide for common-sense rules, and leave valuables at the villa.
Everyone wants a different thing. Pick one big activity per day and leave the afternoons free.

FAQ
Is Santa Teresa good for a bachelorette party?
Yes, for a group that wants surf, wellness and sunset drinks with a few late nights. A typical weekend includes a surf lesson, a beach club afternoon, a private chef dinner and a DJ dinner at Uma or a night at Tikiliano. It is not a club destination.
How much does a bachelor or bachelorette trip to Santa Teresa cost?
About $800 to $1,200 a person for four nights, before flights. The biggest lines are lodging at $270 to $335 a person for a shared hotel room, drinks and one or two activities at $60 to $100 each.
Where should a group stay in Santa Teresa?
A villa or a hotel you can take over, near Playa Carmen or the centre so you can walk to dinner. Nala Santa Teresa can be rented as a whole property. Ask in writing about party and noise rules, because at least one Mal Pais lodge bans these groups.
What activities should we book?
A group surf lesson in the morning, an ATV tour to the Montezuma waterfalls, a boat day to Isla Tortuga or a bioluminescence night, a private chef dinner at the villa and a beach club afternoon. Book the chef and the boat first.
Which night is best for a night out?
Saturday is the biggest night, with Tikiliano filling after 11pm. Friday has a DJ at Uma, Sunday has the Rocamar sunset party and Tuesday has Deep Tuesday, a day and sunset beach party at Ranchos. Full moon nights at Ranchos are the highlight.
How do we get home after drinking?
Book a WhatsApp driver or call Pantera Transportation before you go out, because the taxi stand empties around 10pm. Never ride a quad or scooter after drinking.
