Sunset on a Wednesday
The sun sets between about 5:15pm and 5:45pm all year, and the light is gone by 6:15pm in September. Build the evening around that.
Rocamar is the swing bar at the north end of the beach, down the Rocamar road. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, so Wednesday is a normal day for it. Swings and daybeds face the break, cocktails run $10 to $14, a beer $4 to $5, and there is a minimum spend of about $15 per person if you want a lounger. It is a sunset bar that winds down early, so arrive by 4:45pm.
Banana Beach is next door and has lounge chairs and day beds on the sand, live music and a bonfire as it gets dark. It is more social than Rocamar and good for groups. The Nantipa deck is the quiet, polished option. Uma Beach Club, a few minutes along the beach, has a happy hour from 3pm to 5pm daily, with its DJ night on Fridays. If you would rather watch from the hill, Brukas above Mal Pais is open from 5pm Wednesday and has the widest view on the coast. It needs a quad or a driver who knows the steep, rutted road.
Dinner on a Wednesday
Wednesday is the night you can get a good table without a plan, which is not true of Thursday or Saturday.
La Cevicheria is the one dinner for a single night out: five styles of ceviche with patacones in a plain room on the main road, large ceviche about $18. It is closed Sundays, so Wednesday is open.
Katana serves dinner only, 5:30pm to 10pm, in a garden 600 metres north of the Playa Carmen crossroads. Asian fusion for mixed tables, $15 to $25 a person before drinks. In high season, still book.
Amici is open 5:30pm to 10pm daily, wood oven pizza at $17 to $27 and pasta made in house. Osa opens 4pm to 10pm with a menu that follows the day's catch, mains $15 to $25. Convivio on Calle Buenos Aires is the upscale table, $35 to $55 a person with drinks. Satori Sushi is open 11am to 11pm daily with a rooftop terrace. Rolls average about $12, and a fully ordered table can reach $100 for two.
Eat Street is the one to pick if you want people around you. It is an open food market on the main road, open 7am to 10pm, with four kitchens under one roof and a bar in the middle. A dinner main is about $11 and it runs 2 for 1 drinks from 4pm to 6pm. It stays social without pretending to be a club.

The main event: Banana Beach
Banana Beach is a beachfront hotel, restaurant and bar. Its own restaurant page lists opening until 1am, 2 for 1 drinks, live music every evening and a bonfire. Wednesday and Monday are the nights that regulars name for a bigger party, with a DJ and people out to dance. I would not promise the format, because the party night moves with the week and the crowd. Look at the Banana Beach Instagram on Wednesday afternoon and decide from that.
On a busy Wednesday expect a mixed crowd of surf lessons, long stay expats and travellers, a bonfire with a ring of people, and a bar that moves quickly. On a flat one, it is a guitar, a few tables and a good place to finish a meal. Both are fine.
Cost: you pay for what you order. Cocktails run $10 to $14 on this strip and 2 for 1 cuts that roughly in half. I have not seen a standing cover charge. A guest DJ is the exception, so ask.
The late option: Tikiliano
Tikiliano is an open-air tiki lounge inside the Wave Boutique Mall, opposite Hotel Playa Cielo on the main road. It is open from 6pm and, from Wednesday to Saturday, runs until about 2:30am, the latest license on the strip. Its weekly pattern on its own Instagram runs Thursday reggae and dancehall, Friday Latin and reggaeton with a free 9pm salsa class, and Saturday electronic. Wednesday is the warm up. It is a late bar with a long cocktail list ($14 to $18) rather than a full dance night, so expect a smaller room and a DJ if one has been booked. Ask on the Tikiliano WhatsApp or Instagram if you are coming specifically for music.
If you want to dance properly, wait for Thursday, when Somos runs a live band into a DJ from about 9:30pm, or Saturday.
A quieter alternative
Drift is a restaurant, bar, deli market and art gallery in central Santa Teresa. The bar is open daily from 4pm to 10pm, later on nights with live music or a special event. It is a dinner and cocktail stop that closes around 10pm, with cocktails at $12 to $15 and 2 for 1 specials on a board. The art gallery side, and the deli, make it a nice place to be before eating.
Goma is a small bar behind Kooks, with room for about 30 and a closing time around 1am. It is where I send people who want a cocktail and a conversation. Kooks Smokehouse and Bar itself is open 10am to 10pm, with smoked barbecue and craft beer. The live music guide lists acoustic nights, which turn up midweek.
Getting there and getting home
There is no Uber or Bolt in Santa Teresa. Your choices are a taxi, which your hotel or the restaurant will call, a quad or scooter you rent, or walking. The roads are dirt and dark in stretches, and the late hours at Tikiliano mean a late ride. If you drove a quad or scooter, do not ride it home after drinking. High season versus green season
December to April, Wednesday is a lively night and the beach bars fill, so book Katana and Convivio, and expect taxis to be harder to find after 10pm. The party at Banana Beach is more likely to be real and busy.
In green season, roughly May to November, Wednesday is quiet and often better for it.
