Sunset first
The sun sets between about 5:15pm and 5:45pm all year. If you want a drink with it, Rocamar is open Tuesday to Sunday, so Thursday is a normal day. The swings sit at the tide line at the north end of the beach, cocktails run $10 to $14, and the minimum spend for a lounger is about $15 per person. It winds down early, so arrive by 4:45pm.
Banana Beach is next door and has live music and a bonfire most evenings, open until 1am. Brukas on the hill above Mal Pais has the widest view on the coast from 5pm, if you have a quad or a driver for its steep road. The sunset spots guide has the rest. Plan to leave the beach by 6pm so you reach the market while the stalls are full.
The Thursday market
The Thursday market is a social event with food stalls more than a shopping trip. It sits on the main road in the Carmen area, and everyone from Playa Carmen to Mal Pais seems to turn up in the same place at the same time: expats, surf instructors, families, nomads, and travellers off the ferry. Arrive between 6pm and 6:30pm. The empanadas, ceviche cups and wood fired pizza are at their best then, and some sell out by 8pm. By 7:30pm the road crawls and parking is hard, which matters only if you drove.
Spend on food cooked in front of you. Empanadas and patacones run roughly 1,000 to 2,000 colones a piece, or $2 to $4. Pizza is about $8 to $14, a large smoothie $4 to $7. The craft stalls are hit or miss, so be choosy. Talk to people, because this is how you hear about a bonfire or a guest DJ that has not been posted anywhere.
Dinner if you want a table
If the market food looks tired that week, or you want to sit down, eat by 9pm if Somos is the plan.
Katana is dinner only, 5:30pm to 10pm, in a garden 600 metres north of the Playa Carmen crossroads. Asian fusion, $15 to $25 a person before drinks. Thursday fills it, so book. Amici runs 5:30pm to 10pm daily, with wood oven pizza at $17 to $27 and house made pasta. La Cevicheria is the single dinner I would pick for a first night: five styles of ceviche with patacones, a large one at about $18, open Thursday. Convivio on Calle Buenos Aires is $35 to $55 a person with drinks. Satori Sushi is open 11am to 11pm daily with a rooftop terrace, and rolls average about $12.

The main event: House of Somos
Somos is the Thursday party. A live band plays first and rolls into a DJ, from about 9:30pm to midnight, in a garden that fills with locals, expats and the surf school crowd. It does not thin out early. The venue runs a restaurant, a cafe and a surf shop under the same name, so the crowd is mixed and comfortable rather than a strict club.
Do not arrive at 9pm and expect a dance floor. The band starts the night, and the DJ takes over after. Check the Somos Instagram on Thursday afternoon for the line up, because the band changes and an occasional guest DJ gets posted late. Expect to pay for what you drink at cocktail prices of $10 to $14 on the strip, with 13% tax and 10% service added. A cover is not standard, but ask if a guest is booked.
The late option: Tikiliano
Tikiliano is the open-air tiki lounge inside the Wave Boutique Mall, opposite Hotel Playa Cielo on the main road. Its own Instagram runs Thursday as reggae and dancehall, Friday as Latin and reggaeton with a free 9pm salsa class, and Saturday as electronic. It is open until about 2:30am Wednesday to Saturday, which is the latest license on the strip. Cocktails run $14 to $18.
The usual Thursday move is Somos from 9:30pm to midnight, then a short walk or ride to Tikiliano for the people who want more. If you want to keep dancing past 1am on a Thursday, this is the place that does it reliably. I would not count on any other room being open late.
La Pasion, the speakeasy under Koji's on the Buenos Aires road, went quiet after April 2026 and Google lists it as permanently closed, so do not plan a Thursday around it. Kooks Smokehouse and Bar is open 10am to 10pm, a dinner and a beer rather than a late stop.
A quieter alternative
Drift is a restaurant, bar, deli market and art gallery in central Santa Teresa. The bar is open daily from 4pm to 10pm, later on nights with live music or a special event. It is a dinner and cocktail stop, $12 to $15 a drink with 2 for 1 specials on a board, that winds down around 10pm. Use it as the calm half of a Thursday, before or instead of Somos.
Goma, behind Kooks, has room for about 30 and closes around 1am. It is where I send anyone who wants a cocktail and a conversation after the market. The live music guide lists acoustic nights, and the date night guide has a Thursday sequence for two.
A Thursday that works
Rocamar at 4:45pm, market at 6:15pm, dinner at the market or a sit down table by 8:30pm, Somos at 9:30pm, Tikiliano if you still have energy, taxi home. That is the whole night and it costs about $50 to $90 a person depending on how much you eat and drink.
Getting there and getting home
There is no Uber or Bolt in Santa Teresa. Your options are a taxi, which your hotel or the venue will call, a quad or scooter you rent, a bike, or your feet. The market sits on the main road in the Carmen area. From Mal Pais it is roughly 10 to 15 minutes by bike or scooter. A short in town taxi hop is about $10 to $15, so agree the fare before you get in. Taxis, Bolt and Uber and getting around without a car cover it.
The road is unlit in stretches and the dirt shoulder is rough in the dark. If you rode a quad or scooter, do not ride it home after Somos or Tikiliano. Take a taxi and collect the vehicle in the morning. Best ATV rentals covers quads. Costa Rica bans vehicles on beaches. Bring a headlamp if you plan to walk, and read safety for the longer version. Late taxis are scarce after midnight, especially in high season, so ask for the pickup before you need it.
High season versus green season
From December to April, Thursday is busy from 6pm: the market is crowded, Somos is full by 10pm, taxis vanish after midnight and Katana needs a booking. Come early to everything.
In green season, roughly May to November, Thursday is smaller and often better. Shorter lines, more locals, and vendors who cook every week. If Thursday is quiet
It is not Saturday. The market crowd thins after 8pm, some of it walks to Somos or Tikiliano, and some goes home. If it rains, the market shrinks to a few covered stalls. In that case the plan is simple: dinner at Amici or Katana, a drink at Drift, and bed. If you came looking for a packed dance floor at 1am, wait for Saturday or check for a posted guest DJ.
